I learned more
about architecture today than I have in everyday of my life
previously. The first building visited was the Stock Pavilion. I had
never thought before about the importance of and architecture's role
in bringing people together instead of just allowing multitudes of
people to see an event, but it was obvious once it was explained how
much of an impact feeling like part of an audience can have on
someone's experience at a particular place.
After leaving the
Stock Pavilion we traveled north through the South Quad, and it was
mentioned how the space looked too wide. I had not known before that
the trees there now were not the originally planted on that quad,
which had grown to an enormous height only to be destroyed by a
disease. I am grateful that funds were donated for new planting; I
could not imagine that space without trees lining the walkways. We
also discussed axes and their role in planning the layout of a campus
or city as well as the twenty-miles of tunnels under the campus.
By far the most
interesting thing that was brought to my attention on this first
walking tour was the fact that the library was not finished. It seems
obvious now, but it had never occurred to me before that a library
would need space to grow so that new books can be added. I cannot
wait to see what I will learn in the rest of the semester’s
classes.
